3 Panel Circle Skirt - Snow White Cosplay Part 1

I spent a lot of time looking up Snow White cosplays online, but overall decided that I just did not care for the options that I had within the budget that I wanted to stick with. So, I decided to make one myself! I wanted it to be similar to her gown in the Disney film, but with a little bit of my own spin on it.

Unfortunately, I don't have many fabric stores around, so after exhausting all my options, I finally decided to go ahead and order some fabric from Fabric.Com. It ended up being PERFECT and I was so happy. I was nervous about ordering fabric online (this was a first for me!), so I was relieved when it came and was exactly what I was hoping for!

I decided to use Simplicity 1550. I read some reviews online and it seemed like the general consensus was that it was a decent starter pattern, so I went with it. I plan to use the main long skirt and bodice A for this project. I already have a white camisa that I am hoping will work well with the finished pieces - otherwise I may just use the blouse in this pattern as well.

I started with the skirt - it seemed the easiest and was pretty similar to a skirt I've made before, so I decided to ease in with something I'm already familiar with.

Like I said, the fabric ended up being perfect. It's a pretty yellow with shiny flowers embroidered all over. But... this skirt... SO. MUCH. FABRIC. I was drowning in it as I tried to keep it all straight!

I will admit, I deviated from the pattern instructions. I basically just used the skirt pattern piece and did what I wanted. What can I say. I like things simple... I didn't want to mess with the waistband and blah blah blah. So here's what I did:

I cut my three panels the size that my pattern told me to based on my measurements. But math told me there was no way this skirt was going to fit over my hips. It was going to be about half an inch too tight. So I cut about 1" off the top of each of the pieces, to make them a little wider. This ended up working perfectly for me. DO NOTE that this obviously will cut an inch off of the length - good news for me, I'm short, and even after cutting off that inch, and hemming, and getting rid of the waist band... it's still too long for me. Even when wearing heels.

Once I was sure the waist measurements would work for me, I sewed the three panels together.

Next, I sewed the waist down (width of elastic + seam allowance) so that there was enough room for my elastic to slide through.

I might make a little sash to wrap over the waistband to kind of hide the elastic, but I'm not sure if the waist will show or be hidden under my bodice anyways.

Almost done!

I won't lie, this is when I put my skirt on with a blue corset and my blue high heels and walked around my apartment like I was Snow White. :) BUT there's still one last step. It needs to be hemmed at the bottom, but because circle skirts are cut all over the grain, the fabric is going to stretch differently, causing the hem to become uneven. So now it's currently hanging and awaiting hemming.

And that is part one! I'm really happy with how it turned out. I just need a petticoat underneath to add a little extra fluff!

Part 2 will be on the bodice!
